Jean spent almost two decades behind bars, and now he's finally a free man. Not quite: he's on parole, and, after he breaks it, Javert, a hard-boiled inspector, chases after him to bring the convict back to where he belongs. At the same time, a kind-hearted and honorable woman becomes a prostitute to provide for her lovely daughter. All that pain, suffering and humiliation turn out to be too much for her, and she dies within days. Jean promises to take care of her child as his own. The story takes place on the backdrop of the blood-thirsty June Rebellion. The working-class people just want to be treated as equals and the heroes of this tale sing their immortal songs to keep their spirits alive.
